Jonathan Rosenblum and Steve Early are both labor organizers and reporters who have written books about recent U.S. labor battles. In conversation with Lynne Dodson, secretary treasurer of the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, the two authors will discuss the successes and the challenges of the movements they have covered.
Seattle-based Rosenblum’s Beyond $15 reveals an insider’s view of SeaTac’s fight for a $15 minimum wage. Rosenblum shares firsthand accounts from the grassroots movement, including the face-to-face confrontations between corporate leaders and airport workers and the challenges of uniting a diverse, largely immigrant workforce.
Early’s book Refinery Town tells the story of Richmond, California, a working-class town that fought big oil to reclaim their community. Home to one of the largest oil refineries in the state, Richmond’s hundred thousand largely nonwhite residents experienced decades of poverty, substandard housing, and poorly funded public education.
