► BEN SOUNDSCAPE
(Intrigue Music / The Insiders — UK)
Ben Soundscape started producing his first breakbeat at school at age 17. He remembers becoming hooked on drum & bass when he first went to a club in Bristol. It was around that time he started listening to Fabio & Grooverider’s seminal Radio 1 show, and got the bug straightaway.
Danny C was the first to notice him, signing him for the debut release on Blue Box when Ben was just 19. Soon after, Ben formed a duo with childhood friend Joe Wills, later becoming The Insiders. Together they would draw influences from everything from soul, funk and jazz to house, techno and film soundtracks, and go on to release material on some of the greatest labels in the scene. Ben has produced tracks for Creative Source, Renegade Recordings, Metalheadz, 31 Records, Frontline, Defunked, Breakbeat Science, Nu Directions, Good Looking Records (as Catch 22) and Blue Box (as First Light).
Ben is the brains behind Intrigue, the club night started more than thirteen years ago at an intimate venue in Bristol. His vision was inspired by the Swerve nights in London – quality, forward thinking music in a small club. A great atmosphere, good sound system and strong crowd were important qualities he had to build up for years. Fast forward to the present, and Intrigue has become a firmly established and highly successful drum & bass event.
The next step for Ben was to start his own label, Intrigue Music, which was formed in 2009 as an outlet for deep drum & bass. With the quality of music the label continues to release, it’s no wonder Intrigue Music attracts major attention and support from both DJs, drum & bass heads and the press alike.
Ben’s release schedule is busy for 2017, with the new release of his latest compilation ‘Intrigue 14 – The Anniversary Collection’, featuring fourteen tracks to celebrate fourteen years of Intrigue. He features on four of the tracks himself, including new co-labs with Randall and Random Movement, alongside heavyweights such as Break, Calibre and RoyGreen & Protone. After that there is music forthcoming on Mac II and more on Intrigue. New collaborations are in the works with Mako, Paramount, Hugh Hardie and Superior Selectionz.
Recent DJ support for Ben’s production has come from Friction, DJ Marky, LTJ Bukem, Fabio, Randall, Riya and Storm.
► COLLETTE WARREN
(Intrigue Music — UK)
Collette Warren is a singer/songwriter born and raised in Birmingham, with influences from Motown, jazz, reggae and soul, funk, 90’s R&B and disco. She has been singing since a really young age, thanks to growing up in a very musical family.
In 2007 she moved to London to follow her long-held dream of becoming an artist, and was quickly noticed by MC Tali, who asked her to join her live jazz band as a backing singer. This was an amazing experience, giving her the confidence she needed and allowing her the opportunity to play such legendary venues as Ronnie Scott’s and the Jazz Café. She continued working closely with Tali until 2012, performing at Sun & Bass and a major festival in New Zealand. Since then, she has begun to make a name for herself as a solo artist, performing solo at Sun & Bass in 2012, and then Renegade Hardware, D&BTV, Intrigue, Signal FM (Slovakia), Fizzy Friday and Superfine.
In recent times Collette has been focusing on writing and recording new vocal material for many of the drum & bass scene’s leading producers. Artists she has worked with so far include Skeptical, FD, Stanza, Kasra & Enei, The Insiders, Ben Soundscape, Utah Jazz and Superior Selectionz. One of her most recognisable tracks of late is the massive ‘Always Been Mine’, due for release on Soul:R later this year. She has also featured on several deep house tracks with Jayce.
After being a raver and dedicated d&b fan for over 13 years, Collette is now firmly establishing herself as a talented artist, and realising her dream. Look out for big releases this year on Intrigue Music, Soul:R, Exit and more.
(Commerical Suicide / Dispatch / C.I.A)
Quadrant, a.k.a Leigh Caplan, has been writing quality Drum and Bass for nearly a decade. From his humble origins as a hungry young producer in his native Seattle, to his current status as a respected artist on the worldwide scene, the goal has always been the same: make music that he is proud to call his own.
Originally a four-person collective gathered in a Philadelphia basement, Quadrant gained modest notoriety for their bootleg of Faithless’s “Crazy English Summer”, and 2005 saw their debut release, “Arachnid”, on the legendary UK label Renegade Hardware. During the next year, they released three more tunes on Hardware, most notably “Manipulated Living” on the Carpe Diem LP, a track that hasn’t left many DJs’ crates since.
Following these initial successes was a highly respected slew of appearances on Triple Vision labels Citrus and Fokuz, showcasing equal proclivities for dancefloor impact and melodic beauty– a rare combination in a genre that so often seems to favor one at the expense of the other.
Quadrant’s transformation into a solo project has only served to increase the volume, quality, and focus of the music.
It has also allowed for a wider variety of collaborations with like-minded artists from around the world; a recent co-production with UK producers Allied on Trust in Music, a killer remix swap with Italy’s venerable Dabs on Citrus, and several works penned with fellow Seattle producers such as Homemade Weapons, and Kid Hops.
December of 2012 saw the release of “Anthropocene”, a collaboration with Iris, on the Metalheadz Genesis EP volume 4, allowing Quadrant to leave a mark on arguably the most well-respected label in all of Drum and Bass. Soon after, “Hovercraft” was featured exclusively on Hospital Records’ Hospitality 2013 compilation.
With tracks newly signed to Total Science’s C.I.A imprint, Dispatch, and Commercial Suicide, as well as worldwide DJ support from artists such as Goldie, Klute, A Sides, Silent Witness, Survival, Ulterior Motive, and State of Mind, this is an exciting time for Quadrant, and loyal fans everywhere.
