There's not much better than homemade bread fresh from the oven, but baking sourdough bread can be intimidating. Working with sourdough is easy once you have a healthy starter and some inspiration, and we'll give you both in this 4-hour hands-on class!
We'll kick off the class with sourdough bread samples, butter, and jam, and you'll learn a simple master dough recipe based on the infamous Tartine method that is easily adapted to your preferences. We'll go through the whole sourdough process together, including how to:
— Feed and maintain a healthy starter
— Shape, score, and bake a loaf
— Evaluate crumb and texture
We'll break for a lunch of soup, salad, and (you guessed it!) bread, and you'll have the opportunity for a 'down-time' session where the instructor will walk you through grains, fermentation times, schedules, and resources. This will give you a deeper understanding of how to develop flavour in your bread and the wonderful local flours we have available in Washington.
After baking two loaves together during class, you'll leave with a shaped loaf that's ready to bake at home and a jar of healthy starter.
