NORDRA
“Pinprick guitar lines, swaths of ethereal brass, sub-bass thuds, the clatter of distorted percussion, fever dream lullaby melodies—it can be difficult to discern what sounds we’re hearing over the course of Nordra’s eponymous debut given the strange and unorthodox context of their combination. And while many tech savvy artists have managed to build strange symphonies and texturally curious electronic exercises within the lonely confines of user-friendly software, those in-the-box tactics don’t line up with the mission statement of… Monika Khot, the mastermind behind Nordra. “The record has a lot to do with the loss of information from analog to digital conversion, which is then in turn paired with static and dynamic thought discrepancies,” Khot says. “I tried to make as many smoothed-over arcs of sound as I could all alongside very sequenced, quantized beats—making a path from point to point sonically.”
— SPIDER TRIO (Wally Shoup/ Dave Abramson/ Jeffery Taylor)
«Powerful, brutal yet cautious and weary. Free music, taking its time to unfold and evolve. Brittle, harrowing, noisy yet focused, tight and explosive.» — Bruce Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery, NYC.
WALLY SHOUP is a passionate saxophonist, veteran free improvisor, and visual artist. Since 1974 he has been an active organizer, DJ, and player of music merging free jazz, free improvisation and noise. He released his first album, Scree-Run Waltz in 1981. Shortly after arriving in Seattle in 1985, he and Paul Hoskin started organizing the Seattle Improvised Music Festival, which is still running today. Shoup has performed countless concerts and released many albums, collaborating with Chris Corsano, Thurston Moore, Toshi Makihara, Paul Flaherty, Peter Evans, Davey Williams, La Donna Smith, Nels Cline, etc…
DAVE ABRAMSON is a drummer and percussionist from New Jersey. Since moving to Seattle in 2002 he has recorded, performed and/or toured with Eyvind Kang, Lori Goldston, Secret Chiefs 3, Climax Golden Twins, Boredoms, Grails, Wally Shoup, etc. Abramson is a core member of the Seattle based bands Diminished Men, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Wayne Horvitz's The Royal We, Seth Alexander Quintet, and has composed and edited music for The Maureen Whiting Dance company since 2004. He can be heard on albums released by Tzadik, Sub Pop, K, Drag City, Abduction, Conspiracy, Hydrahead, Web of Mimicry, Important records, etc.
JEFFERY TAYLOR is one half of the legendary, subversive Climax Golden Twins. As a shape-shifting guitarist and sound artist, Taylor's playing ranges from haunting melodies and ethereal stillness, to dense textures, controlled chaos and delta blues reformation. In 2008 Climax Golden Twins and members of A Frames joined forces as AFCGT releasing several LPs including the self-titled AFCGT on Subpop. Messenger Girls Trio is another related project that features Rob Millis, Taylor, Dave Knott and Sir Richard Bishop that has produced two LPs of improvised collaged acoustic guitar music. His most recent project Hound Dog Taylor's Hand features his chameleon-like abilities alongside drummer Mark Ostrowski and bassist John Seman.
