NAPAWF Seattle 2018 I Bridging Conversation with Action
NAPAWF Seattle presents to you a conversation that will expand our skills, build our community, and empower us to take action. Together, we will engage in discussion on how to navigate the workspace as an AAPI womxn, share stories/lived experiences, and move into courageous conversations.
Join us on June 12th from 6:00-8:00pm at 21 Progress (409 Maynard Ave S Ste 202, Seattle, WA 98104).
We will converse over dinner, then break out into small groups to discuss specific topics found below. These topics were brought to us by you all through a survey we sent out to our NAPAWF members via our listserv and personally connecting with folks.
FEATURED FACILITATOR I MARY NGUYEN
Our featured facilitator for the evening will be past NAPAWF co-chair and Washington CAN Executive Director, Mary Nguyen.
Mary Le Nguyen is the first person of color to serve as Executive Director of Washington Community Action Network (Washington CAN), a racial, gender, and economic justice organization with a 34-year history and over 44,000 members statewide. Born to Vietnamese refugee parents in a small logger town, she learned early on how racism and poverty keep families from living a dignified life. Nguyen brings over a decade in community organizing experience in immigrant and refugee communities, workers' rights, and reproductive justice.
The event will focus on the following four topics:
(1) Professional Development and Advancement: Pay equity, glass/bamboo ceiling, promotion, training, mxntorship
(2) Being Your Full Self: Code-switching, cultural mismatch, support from peers, heteronormativity, non-inclusivity
(3) White Hegemony: leadership, coworkers, work environment
(4) Patriarchy: Power dynamics, mansplaining, opinions not being heard or valued, gifts/talent not being seen/recognized, sexual harassment
