This years results of the January Point in Time Count show that the number of unsheltered neighbors experiencing homelessness now surpasses those who are sheltered. One of the most dramatic increases though, are among those who live in a car or an RV. The 2018 count found a 46% increase in folks taking residence in vehicles, and at the moment, the city does not have a plan for how to address this increase in vehicular dwellers.
Typically, Real Change holds our annual gong event outside of City Hall, but this year we are taking the gong, and our protest, to Amazon. Why you might ask? Because Amazon is ground zero for the massive changes our city is facing--the affordable housing crisis, skyrocketing rents, increased traffic--and when asked to pay 0.26 percent of its profits in local taxes they resorted to threats of cancelling construction of office space and construction jobs!
Real Change fought hard with our allies for this progressive business tax on the top 3% of corporations in the city. We need this progressive, sustainable revenue source to address the housing and homelessness crisis. Washington state has the most regressive tax system in the nation, with Seattle leading the state as the city with the most regressive taxation. We cannot continue relying on property taxes and sales taxes to find new revenue to solve our city's dire needs.
We will be ringing the gong 6,320 times to represent each of our unsheltered neighbors sleeping outside. Please join us at the Amazon spheres!
